Passion Unleashed

Meet Edoardo Lanza, the creative force behind Globular Waves, a 26-year-old artist with a profound love for music.

Thanks for speaking with us, how are things with you?

Hi there! I am doing very well at the moment and having a very creative time. Summer is coming, and I have several dates lined up. It will definitely be a fun summer!

We'd love to hear about your experience in building your first small modular system. How did it enable you to bring your musical ideas to life more efficiently?

When I started building my first small modular system, I immediately realized its immense potential. The most powerful aspect is the stimulation of creativity it provides. Connecting the cables, manipulating parameters, and turning knobs constantly drive me to conduct effective sound research. Prior to owning my system, the sound I produced lacked dynamics and felt static. Building my system was like a breath of fresh air.

Live performances often offer unique energy compared to studio production. What aspects do you enjoy most about performing live, and how does it differ from your studio work?

Live performances mean everything to me. My favorite aspect is expressiveness. Almost always, my live sets evolve during the show, transforming into something different that follows the event's vibe. It's an unexpected and natural process. In contrast, my studio work is more categorical and less dynamic. I maintain a static routine for my productions while still focusing on sound research. If I had to choose, I would prioritize live performances. Playing music live is the reason I make music.

The Komorebi Music Festival 2023 sounds exciting. Could you share some insights into your upcoming live performance and what attendees can expect?

Here's the link to purchase your 3-day pass for the Komorebi Music Festival

Yes, I am very happy about this year's edition! My slot will be late morning, it's a fun slot because it will be the bridge between the ambient music of the morning and the more "rhythmic" part of the afternoon and evening. It will be a downtempo set with a lot of ethnic influences and a solid electronic base. I am practicing right now and it is a very inspiring and expressive live set. This year's edition of the Komorebi Music Festival makes me very happy because I will have the opportunity to share the stage with one of my biggest inspirations, Priori, who will present his live set on Saturday and it will be his first time in Italy. Other guests will be Peter Van Hoesen, Ian Pooley, Dj Red, Voodoos and Taboos, Leena and many others. I can't wait to be in that fabulous forest surrounded by sound and great vibes.

"My sound is a reflection of the world around me,and my travels allow me to experience it in new ways."

Can you walk us through your use of QuBit modules in a live set, and how they contribute to the creation of your unique sound?

I use QuBit modules extensively in my live sets due to their remarkable power and convenient panel controls. Nebulae V2 and Prism enable me to generate captivating textures and soundscapes through granular synthesis. Surface and Nautilus form another line for creating melodic sequences using acoustic sounds and unconventional delays, greatly appreciated during live performances. Additionally, I incorporate Data Bender with an in and out interface (Strymon), enabling me to apply crunchy glitches to the sound of my Elektron instruments via the send and return of my external mixer. Lastly, Chance, in combination with Doepfer Octal vca, diversely influences controls in my system, while an external Faderbank 16n facilitates random modulation of my patches. The discovery of QuBit modules has greatly enriched my musical journey.

How do your hybrid setup of Eurorack modules and Elektron instruments allow you to explore different sound territories and enhance your live sets?

As far as I am concerned, both my modular system and the Elektron machines stimulate a lot of creativity, but in two different ways. I have found through the union of these two Worlds perfection. This hybrid setup allows me to quickly lay out on the sequencers my ideas that I have in my head when creating and shape the perfect sound very quickly. I think my setup is very live set oriented, and it allows me to do a variety of tricks that are great for performing live. I have tried in the past to replace Elektron machines with other sequencers or grooveboxes but there was no competition, working with this setup is always a pleasure and provides me with a lot of satisfaction. In the last period I am also trying to add a new instrument in my setup: the Soma Pipe, to increase the expressiveness of my performances.

When not in the studio or on tour, how do you like to unwind?

I like to read a lot, I am passionate and fascinated by Japanese literature, I also use books as research when I cannot find inspiration in the studio. I love nature very much, I like to look around and feel the world around me, I always try to transfer these feelings within my sound, and I always try to travel as much as possible to visit new places and experience new sensations. Another very big passion of mine is glasses, I’m an eyewear addict.
